TMJ (jaw joint) disorders often involve overworked jaw muscles — especially the masseter — from clenching and grinding. Injecting botulinum toxin into these muscles relaxes them, reducing clenching force, jaw tension, and the headaches and tooth wear that grinding can cause.
Benefits
- Reduces jaw clenching and grinding force
- Eases jaw tension, soreness, and associated tension headaches
- May protect teeth from grinding damage (alongside dental care)
- Quick treatment with no downtime
- Flat pricing that includes the medication
Who it’s for
Adults with jaw clenching, bruxism (grinding), masseter tension, or TMJ-related muscle pain confirmed at assessment. It treats the muscle component of TMJ problems — it does not fix joint damage, bite problems, or dental causes, and some patients also need dental input such as a night guard.
What to expect
After an assessment of your jaw muscles, bite history, and symptoms, treatment involves a small number of injections into the jaw muscles (and sometimes the temples, depending on your pattern), taking about 15–20 minutes. You can return to normal activities immediately. Relief builds over 1–2 weeks.
Recommended sessions
Typically every 3–4 months; some people need it less often over time.
Before & after your visit
- Before: Mention dental work in progress, jaw surgery history, and any previous toxin treatments.
- After: Avoid rubbing the jaw area and skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours; stay upright for 4 hours after treatment.
- Downtime: None typically; mild tenderness at injection points is possible.
- Results: Reduced clenching within 1–2 weeks, with the full effect judged at a 2-week review.
- Duration: Typically 3–4 months; repeated treatments may allow longer intervals.
- Risks: Temporary chewing fatigue on hard foods, asymmetry of the smile if the product spreads, bruising; rarely, changes to bite feel. Not suitable during pregnancy.
Frequently asked questions
Will it slim my face?
Relaxing an overdeveloped masseter can soften a square jaw over time, but at Diamond this is booked and dosed as a therapeutic treatment for clenching and pain.
Can I stop wearing my night guard?
Keep using it unless your dentist advises otherwise — the two work well together.
Does it hurt?
A few small injections; most patients find it quick and very tolerable.
How often will I need it?
Usually every 3–4 months; some people need it less often over time.
What if my jaw pain is from the joint itself?
Then toxin may not be the answer — the assessment will identify this and point you to the right next step.
